The Traditional Foods of Indigenous Native Americans
Native Americans had a number of spiritual customs connected with food. The Comanches used to thank the Creator for their food. They would hold a piece of food toward the sky and then burn it as an offering.
The Native Americans are well revered for being resourceful people, and when it comes to Native American foods, there is no difference. They were well versed at using the ingredients that were readily available to them and for making many different foods with them. Corn and various corn products are abundant in Native American foods
recipes and they have lent many of their earliest delicacies to the American culture as a whole.
Native American culture that not only do they frequently cook with corn as we know it, but they also use what’s known as Harinilla, or Blue Corn Meal. Harnilla can be ground into flour and used for baking tortillas and other starches. Native American foods also consists of the resourceful use of meat. Besides deer, the Native Americans frequently ate rabbits, Prairie dog, Beaver, Lamb, Buffalo, Mutton, and Pork. Using wild grains and vegetables was also commonplace in the Native American diet and along with squash; sage, wild onions, cabbage, pumpkins, and cactus played a vital role in Native American foods.
History of Native Americans Food
American Natives were reasonably healthy before the European Invasions.They lived on the land and in some areas cultivated rich soils and grew crops. For the Bison hunting Nations that were always on the move,their diets were mixtures of the meat that they hunted and the plants, berries and fruits that were found everywhere that they went.This country was a bountiful place hundreds of years ago and Native people survived quite nicely. After the Invasions, everything changed and none of it was good for Natives.Those who were sent to Reservations starved many times. Food meant for them often ended up in the hands of unscrupulous agents,who dispersed the supplies to themselves, their families and friends.
What Were Native American Meals like
Native American cooking tended to be simple. Most Native Americans preferred to eat their food very fresh, without many spices. This was different in Mexico and Central America, where Indians tended to use less fresh meat and more spices in their dishes, including hot peppers, cumin, and chocolate seasonings. Meat was usually roasted over the fire or grilled on hot stones. Fish was often baked or smoked. Soups and stews were popular in some tribes. Corn was eaten in many different ways, including corn-on-the-cob, popcorn, hominy, and tortillas and corn bread baked in clay ovens. Indians in some tribes enjoyed fruit puddings or maple candy for dessert. Most Native Americans always drank water with their meals, but hot chocolate was a popular beverage in Mexico, and some Indians in Central and South America developed an alcoholic corn drink called chicha.
